Reliable, Long-term Solutions- Cherryland Electric Cooperative

A Foundation for Operational Efficiency

Recognizing the need for dependable, region-wide communications, Cherryland Electric Cooperative invested in a infrastructure solution engineered to support both daily operations and future expansion. Nearly a decade after its initial implementation, the solution remains the backbone of Cherryland’s operations, proving that mission-critical isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a long-term investment. The reliability of the Motorola APX series radios and the Tele-Rad-managed infrastructure has allowed CEC to maintain best-in-class reliability for its members even as the cost of doing business rises.

The ongoing success of this solution is built upon three foundational pillars: proven durability, seamless interoperability, and enhanced scalability. By utilizing Motorola APX radios, Cherryland Electric Cooperative ensures that its field teams are equipped with hardware designed to withstand the extreme weather, heavy machinery vibrations, and accidental drops inherent to Michigan’s rugged northern counties. This robust infrastructure also provides the scalability necessary to manage expansive service areas with peak efficiency. The system allows a single dispatcher to oversee the extended region, resulting in a dramatic decrease in unnecessary call volume and a streamlined operational workflow.

Setting the Standard for Utility Communications

In the rugged terrain of northern Michigan, communication isn’t just a convenience—it is a lifeline. Before implementing a modern solution, Cherryland Electric Cooperative (CEC) faced the daunting task of scaling its infrastructure to support 33,000 members across six counties while staying cost efficient. The challenge was clear: they needed a system that offered the wide-area coverage of public safety networks but with the cost-efficiency of a private utility solution.

Tele-Rad and Motorola Solutions partnered together to find a solution. By leveraging the Michigan Public Safety Communication System (MPSCS), the Cherryland Electric Cooperative was able to transition to a P25 digital radio network that provided seamless, crystal-clear communication. This allowed field crews to move from skeptical users of unreliable systems to professionals who trust the performance of P25 radios and use them every day.

Strengthening Community Safety Through Connectivity

The most significant impact of the Tele-Rad and Motorola solution hasn’t just been technical; it has been cultural. CEC General Manager Tony Anderson noted that the co-op has transformed the culture of communications, helping Cherryland move away from the “black hole” of unknown field statuses to a state of total situational awareness.

Because crews can now listen to real-time traffic on their radios, they stay current on field conditions without needing to second-guess their next steps. This communication solution ensures that whether it’s a routine meter check or a massive power restoration effort after a blizzard, every member of the Cherryland team is connected and informed.

Safety is the Prerequisite for Possibility.
