The Power of Signal Mapping & BDA Installation in Large-Scale Facilities Like GRR’s CONRAC

As major infrastructure projects sweep across Michigan, modern developments are reaching new heights in scale, design, and efficiency. However, large multi-level facilities built with reinforced concrete, steel framing, and low-E energy-efficient glass bring a hidden challenge: they block radio signals.

In massive modern developments like the Gerald R. Ford International Airports new CONRAC (Consolidated Rental Car Facility), ensuring flawless radio coverage requires a strategic approach: pairing precision signal mapping with expertly engineered Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) installations.

Testing Further with Professional Signal Mapping

Tele-Rad takes testing much further by utilizing advanced, calibrated frequency monitoring gear and specialized grid-mapping software. Instead of relying on guesswork, our technicians capture precise data points across your entire facility—measuring exact signal power, signal-to-noise ratios, and Bit Error Rate across public safety (VHF, UHF, 700/800 MHz), cellular, and Wi-Fi spectrums.

By plotting this data directly onto your building’s architectural floor plans, Tele-Rad generates a clear, high-resolution 3D coverage heat map. This rigorous diagnostic process pinpoints exact coverage gaps and structural signal loss before a single piece of hardware is ordered. Whether you are bringing a new development up to code or troubleshooting drop-outs in an existing structure, Tele-Rad’s professional signal mapping provides the empirical proof needed to design a fully compliant, cost-effective BDA system that meets strict standards and fire codes.

What is a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA)?

Once signal mapping identifies your coverage gaps, Tele-Rad designs a custom Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) system. A BDA serves as the muscle of an Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System (ERCES).

A BDA acts as a two-way signal bridge:

  1. Inbound: A roof-mounted donor antenna captures signals from nearby public safety towers or base stations. The BDA amplifies the weak signal and pushes it through a distributed network of interior ceiling antennas (a Distributed Antenna System, or DAS).

  2. Outbound: When a firefighter, officer, or staff member presses Push-to-Talk (PTT) inside the building, the indoor antennas pick up the signal, send it through the BDA to be amplified, and broadcast it back out to the external tower.

Why it matters: Those who respond to incidents and emergencies need to have a clear line of communication back to their teams via their portable radios. BDAs bring the exterior signal in and push interior transmissions out, ensuring seamless communication across every foot of your property.

Signal Mapping Solutions

Tele-Rad uses state-of-the-art equipment to map signal strength throughout your building. Identifying problem areas is just the first step in the solution, and we are here to help every step of the way.

Local Statewide Expertise

Tele-Rad is a homegrown Michigan business with deep roots across the Great Lakes State. Having physical service hubs throughout the region allows our technicians to respond quickly, conduct on-site grid testing and deliver fast, local service right where clients operate. Tele-Rad provides comprehensive statewide coverage through strategic local offices spanning Holland, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Benton Harbor, and Marquette County.

Being local doesn’t mean sacrificing world-class technical credentials. Tele-Rad holds some of the highest certifications in the industry, ensuring every system is engineered and installed to strict public safety codes. As a Motorola Solutions Service Elite Specialist and Platinum Channel Partner Tele-Rad is recognized for technical competency in system design, factory-certified service, and the integration of two-way radio communications. Additionally, our FCC and ETA-certified engineering teams maintain the highest industry standards for BDA installations.

Safety is the Prerequisite for Possibility.
